A web server can be your gateway to the Web. It not only allows people to visit Web pages on your own server but it gives you the ability to interact with the visitors to your site. And even if you do normally connect to and use the Web through an ISP, a personal Web server can allow you to temporarily host larger files or other types of materials that you may not otherwise be able to upload to the ISP's Web server.
